The Trial Of The Dervish

There was a dervish who served the Respected Pir. The Respected Pir used to give authority to some of his matured and hard working students to teach and appoint them to some places for that purpose. This dervish one day asks the Pir for authority to teach like others when the Pir is a little mad.

Respected Pir asks: “What kind of worldly goods do you have?”

When dervish says “Sir, I have a house and a vineyard” Pir orders dervish to sell them and to bring the money to him.

Dervish says to himself “He is testing me” and leaves the dergah (dervish house). He sells the house and the vineyard and brings the money to him.

Respected Pir says “My son, take the money and throw it into the sea in Kasimpasha.”

Dervish comes to the shore, puts the money in a bag and ties it with a rope. First he makes sure that no one sees him, and then throws the money into the sea. He puts a mark to that spot, thinking that he will come back to get the money later and returns to the Respected Pir.

Respected Pir asks: “Did you throw the money into the sea my son?” He replies: “Yes, sir.” However, when Pir tells him to cut the rope and release the money, Dervish says to himself, “He did not make anyone but me to sell his house and give away his wealth before he gave him the authority, is this only for me?” Dervish gets offended and takes the money from the shore and leaves the dergah permanently without even greeting him.
